Hotel Accommodations

Rooms have been blocked at three hotels close to Stanford University, plus one (The Stanford Guest House) that is located on-site at SLAC, where LTD-13 will convene. The Stanford Guest House is most convenient to the Workshop (it is on-site) but it is somewhat remote in terms of night-life. From the Stanford Guest House it is a 10-minute walk to a 24-hour supermarket, a 25-minute walk to the Stanford campus and the Stanford Shopping Center, and a 50-minute walk to the main Palo Alto Caltrain station. The Sheraton Palo Alto and the Cardinal Hotel are a 5-minute walk from the Palo Alto University Ave. Caltrain station. The Stanford Terrace Inn borders the Stanford campus on the south side. It is about 1 mile south of the University Ave. Caltrain Station.

Free shuttles will operate between the LTD-13 hotels and the LTD-13 Workshop site at SLAC Sunday afternoon through Friday evening. If the hotels listed below do not meet your requirements, you may want to consider these other local hotels. The holding date for the rooms listed below is until May 19, 2009. Because of the limited number of rooms blocked, we urge you to book your room as soon as possible.

Transportation

The LTD-13 Workshop will be held at the SLAC Stanford National Accelerator Laboratory (2575 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park, CA), approximately 1 mile west of the Stanford campus. Free shuttles will be provided Sunday through Friday to take LTD-13 participants between the local hotels (above) and the Workshop site. Additional free shuttles operated by the Stanford Marguerite service will run as regularly scheduled between the Stanford campus and various destinations in nearby Palo Alto and Menlo Park, including the LTD-13 hotels listed above. Getting to LTD-13 from local airports:

The most convenient local airports for LTD-13 are SFO (San Francisco) and SJC (San Jose, CA). Rental cars are available at both airports. You can also take SuperShuttle or another door-to-door shuttle from SFO or SJC to any LTD-13 hotel for $18-$20. Public transportation is also available between the airports and the vicinity of LTD-13 hotels:

(1) SFO --> BART airport connection --> Take Caltrain South (SFO AirTrain to BART station at the International Terminal parking garage G, purchase $4.00 one-way or $8.00 roundtrip fare-card, take BART one station north to San Bruno, cross-platform timed connection to southbound train to Millbrae, then take elevated walkway to Caltrain southbound, purchase 2-zone $4.25 one-way Caltrain ticket) to Palo Alto University Ave. Caltrain Station. The Sheraton Hotel is adjacent to the Caltrain southbound tracks. See 511.org for exact pricing and schedule options.

If continuing on to the Stanford Terrace Inn you will need to walk 1 mile south, or take the free, red-and-white Stanford Marguerite "Line A" bus on weekdays from the Caltrain station to the south side of the Stanford campus (Olmsted & Yale Ave in Escondido Village), or for $1.75 take either the VTA bus 22 to El Camino and Oxford Ave, 1/2 a block past the Stanford Terrace Inn, or the VTA 522 Rapid bus to El Camino and California Ave, 4 blocks past the Stanford Terrace Inn.

(2) SFO --> SamTrans Bus KX or Bus 397 – Take bus South from SFO to Palo Alto University Ave. Caltrain station. Continue to your LTD-13 hotel, as above.

(3) SJC --> Airport Flyer #10 bus --> Santa Clara Caltrain Station --> Take Caltrain North to Palo Alto University Ave. Station

(4) SJC --> Airport Flyer #10 bus --> Santa Clara Caltrain Station --> VTA 522 or 22 bus North/West to Palo Alto University Ave. (or get off the 22 bus at Stanford Ave., 1 mile south of University Ave., if going to the Stanford Terrace Inn).

Be advised that the Stanford Guest House (at SLAC) is a 3-mile walk from the Palo Alto Caltrain Station. If you arrive Sunday and want a ride to the Stanford Guest House, we suggest you go to the Sheraton Palo Alto (near the Palo Alto Caltrain Station) and ask for the LTD-13 free shuttle that will be operating Sunday from 4 PM to 7 PM.

Local Dining and Entertainment

There are many restaurants and coffee houses located near the Stanford campus. Four areas of concentration include: (a) University Ave. in Palo Alto (b) California Ave. (about 1 mile south of University Ave.), (c) Santa Cruz Ave. in Menlo Park (about 1 mile north of University Ave.), and (d) the Stanford Shopping Center, which is a 5-10 minute walk from the Palo Alto Caltrain Station. For dining out, there are local restaurants in Palo Alto and nearby Menlo Park. There are additional on-campus and off-campus places to eat.

Local bookstores include the Stanford Bookstore (on campus), Borders and Keplers.

Public transportation from Stanford to San Francisco, Berkeley, San Jose, etc., is readily available via Caltrain, local buses, and BART (from transfer stations).
