Welcome Reception

There will be a welcome reception with hors d'oeuvres Sunday, July 19th, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the Workshop site.  LTD-13 participants are encouraged to pick up their registration packets at the Sunday reception.  Buses will be provided between the Workshop hotels and SLAC.

Free Tour

There is a choice of two combination LCLS/SSRL tours on Monday, July 20th or Tuesday, July 21st.  The one-hour tours will start at 4:00 PM.  LCLS & SSRL is housed on-site at SLAC.

Public Lecture


The LTD-13 public lecture will take place on TUESDAY evening in Panofsky Auditorium at SLAC (see PDF map).

The invited speaker is Professor Roger Blandford, Director of the Kavli Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC) at Stanford University.

Optional Wednesday afternoon tours*

There is a choice of four tours of San Francisco attractions, all departing from SLAC at 1:00 PM on Wednesday July 22nd. Participants need to register in advance.

   1. The Exploratorium ($15)

·        A self-guided tour of the Exploratorium museum.

·        The Exploratorium is an experimental, hands-on museum designed to spark curiosity—regardless of your age or familiarity with science. There are hundreds of exhibits to touch, pick up, and tinker with. Your curiosity can be your compass to endless discoveries.       

·        Wear sensible shoes and bring a sweater or jacket; it may be cool when the sun goes down.

·        The Exploratorium closes at 5:00 pm.  Buses will then take you to Union Square where you can walk to many restaurants for dinner.

·        Cost of dinner not included.

·        Departure from SLAC at 1:00 PM and leave San Francisco at 9:30 PM (returning to hotels).

 2. The California Academy of Sciences ($25)

·        A self-guided tour of the California Academy of Sciences and Golden Gate Park.

·        The new Academy brings the whole universe under one roof - an aquarium, a planetarium, a natural history museum and more! The 412,000 square foot structure is not only physically impressive, but it just may be the greenest museum on the planet, with a 2-acre Living Roof, an expansive solar canopy, an extensive water reclamation system, and walls insulated with recycled blue jeans.

·        The Academy is located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, which includes miles of walking paths, S.F. Botanical Garden, Japanese Tea Garden, de Young Museum and many other local destinations.

·        The California of Academy of Sciences closes at 5:00 pm.  Buses will then take you to Union Square where you can walk to many restaurants for dinner.

·        Cost of dinner not included.

·        Departure from SLAC at 1:00 PM and leave San Francisco at 9:30 PM (returning to hotels).

3. Tour Alcatraz Island ($26)

·        You will be dropped off at Fisherman’s Wharf and then take a ferry to Alcatraz Island for the Alcatraz Cellhouse audio tour.

·        Alcatraz Island sometimes informally referred to as simply Alcatraz or locally as The Rock, is a small island located in the middle of San Francisco Bay in California, United States. It served as a lighthouse, then a military fortification, and then a military prison followed by a federal prison until 1963. It became a national recreation area in 1972 and received land-marking designations in 1976 and 1986.

·        After the tour you can walk to many restaurants for dinner.

·        You can have dessert at Ghirardelli Square.

·        Cost of dinner not included.

·        Departure from SLAC at 1:00 PM and leave San Francisco at 9:30 PM (returning to hotels).

4. Tour San Francisco by foot! (FREE)

·        You will be dropped off at Union Square, San Francisco.

·        Experience the unique character of San Francisco's Union Square District, where the best names in fashion, dining and theater have resided for over a hundred years.

·        Take a self-guided walking tour in San Francisco!

·        See the sites in San Francisco! 

·        You can walk to many restaurants for dinner.

·        Cost of dinner not included.

·        Departure from SLAC at 1:00 PM and leave San Francisco at 9:30 PM (returning to hotels).

Workshop Banquet


The LTD-13 Workshop banquet will be held Thursday evening at the Sheraton Palo Alto Inn.  The banquet dinner is included in the conference fee.
